  15. <p>The race for a famed track pits stars against tycoons
  16. </p>
  17. <p>     As proxy battles go, the fight for Hollywood Park racetrack
  18. ranks as a minor contest. But the cast of characters could have
  19. been plucked from the plot of a Dick Francis novel and plunked
  20. down in an episode of Dynasty. In fact, actor John Forsythe,
  21. the patriarch of the defunct TV show, is a star defender of
  22. Majorie Everett, the eccentric chairwoman of the company that
  23. manages the track in Inglewood, Calif.
  24. </p>
  25. <p>     Some stockholders charge that Everett, 69, has turned "the
  26. track of lakes and flowers" into a second-class operation. The
  27. main challenger is R.D. Hubbard, a Texas glassmaking mogul and
  28. owner of tracks in Kansas and New Mexico. Hubbard launched a
  29. proxy battle last November to gain control of the company's
  30. board and install new management, complaining that the company
  31. has lost $27 million in the past three years. Everett
  32. supporters like Merv Griffin counter that she has brought many
  33. innovations to the track, including simulcasting of events.

  35. <p>     Hubbard hired private investigators who, he said, found
  36. evidence that Everett has misappropriated funds. According to
  37. one allegation, she supplied audiovisual gear at company
  38. expense to her friends Ronald and Nancy Reagan. Everett denies
  39. the charges. "They won't find a g.d. thing on me," she told the
  40. Wall Street Journal. Defending Everett's cause, Forsythe got
  41. into a shoving match at the track last month with an opposing
  42. director.

  44. <p>     Hubbard, in his own poll of stockholders, gathered support
  45. from 49.4%, just shy of the majority he needs to take over. As
  46. a result, he will have to wait for an official count that will
  47. take place at the company's annual meeting Feb. 18. Tallyho!
